ABOUT THE BUILDING / ABOUT THE ARCHITECTURE
The Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art is located in a field inside Ansan Hwarang Amusement Park which provides an open view to the nearby surroundings. The museum is also positioned near a lake, which was an important environmental factor to consider in planning the architecture. When designing the building, the element of ‘water’ was carefully incorporated into the structure to create a connectedness to the lake. This was achieved by placing an actual body of water in the south-east side of the museum creating the effect of bringing the lake “indoors”. The parking lot of the amusement park lies on a flat surface and meets the west portion of the building. A slated Bio-Top roof was installed in effort to remove the straining sight of endless parked cars and unites the building with the surrounding green hills.
While the low horizontal structure is a prominent architectural feature of the museum, formative expression and institutional symbolism takes shape in a gigantic vertical T.P.G wall. Stretching vastly from east to west, the wall resembles a mast of a boat, an image which relates to the coastal city Ansan. The wall also provides an overall volume to the museum structure and also a functional divide (North - Exhibition space, South - Office space ). The vertical figure stands out in the open surrounding environment. Entry to the museum lies near the wall, however, artwork is usually carried in and out using the northern service roads.
The first two floors of the museum consists of the office spaces, storage rooms, the auditorium and exhibition rooms, with the main exhibition space located on the second floor. Due to the humidity of the surrounding lands, the storage space was placed on the first floor.
The exhibition space facilitates passageways and moveable walls to create unique viewing experiences. One other factor of the exhibition space to note is the window ceiling 8.5 meters above. The ceiling can be opened and closed freely to control the use of natural light. This type of ceiling system for a museum is one of the first of its kind in the country.
The Gyeonggi Museum incorporates natural resources such as water and sunlight and serves to act as pioneer of creative exhibition spaces. Connecting with nature and communicating with the public, Gyeonggi Museum is open to all citizens of the Gyeonggi Province.
