Lee Kunhee Collection: Modern and Contemporary Korean Art

Seasons

2023. 06. 08. — 2023. 08. 20.
GMoMA Exhibition Hall 1,2,3,4

Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art(GMoMA) presents a special exhibition on modern and contemporary Korean art including the Lee Kun-hee Collection to offer an opportunity to share with the public historically valuable artworks. This exhibition, Seasons, is organized to illuminate the history of Korean modern and contemporary art with a focus on the Lee Kun-hee Collection donated to the MMCA in particular. Seasons featuring collections of GMoMA and 11 art institutions exhibits major works of the artists whose artworks are included in the Lee Kun-hee Collection.

This special exhibition comprises 90 major works of Korean modern and contemporary art from 1927 to 2010, featuring 41 artists, including Rha Hyeseok, Kim Chongtai, Lee Insung, Kim Whanki, Park Sookeun, Lee Jungseop, Chang Ucchin, Chun Kyungja, Quac Insik, Kwon Jinkyu, Park Saengkwang, Lee Ungno and Kang Yobae. It will show how the artworks, produced by the artists who went through the turbulent periods of Japanese colonial rule, war, division and pro-democracy movement while responding to the era, were born in the Korean modern and contemporary history. The participating artists struggled to reach the ultimate state of art in the seasons of their own times and art, living through troubled times in Korean history and changes in the Korean art scene. The title of the exhibition was inspired by Antonio Vivaldi's "Four Seasons." Just like this piece, which has become the classic of classical music with its insightful depiction and harmonious composition, these artists left masterpieces in the modern and contemporary Korean art. Their accomplishments, which have provided rich nourishment for contemporary art, will be showcased like colorful harmonies in the exhibition.

The works on display contain the elements relating to the "four seasons," such as nature, a sense of the season and temporality. These elements are classified and expanded into abstract notions, including "harmony," "nature," "nostalgia" and "cycle." Especially, the GMoMA spotlights the works of a minority of female artists in the Lee Kun-hee Collection, who established their unique world of art in the male-dominated modern and contemporary Korean art scene, as a separate section titled Another Season. Comparing the differences in artists and eras of each conceptual section will also be a key point in appreciating the exhibition. It will invite viewers to walk through their own seasons in today’s life and art in the light of thoughts evoked by the artworks in each section.
