Kim Chaelin×Seo Hyemin: Sculpture Scale
2021. 12. 02. — 2022. 03. 20.
GMoMA Project Gallery
Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art presents the exhibition Sculpture Scale as part of the project ‘Quantum Jump 2021’ from December 2, 2021 to March 20, 2022 at Project Gallery of the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art. The artist collective Poco a Poco consisting of sculptor Kim Chaelin and sound artist Seo Hyemin has explored the relationship between sound and sculpture, sharing their works together, since they met in the Gyeonggi Creation Center Residency Program in 2019.
Sound is usually classified as an immaterial medium while sculpture is categorized as a material medium. The exhibition Sculpture Scale functions as an ‘experience of contact’ between the audience and the artwork, which combines the immateriality of sound with the materiality of sculpture. A musical score showing the way of playing each individual work and that of viewing the exhibition is placed next to the work on exhibit, inviting audience to play in their own ways. In this process, the audience is connected to the work on a one-to-one basis as an appreciator and an actor. The audience’s act oftouching the work becomes music and the point of touch is transmitted to the auditory sense. The exhibition is completed by the audience creating a theatrical moment on their own with the artworks in the exhibition space. While playing by newly using the objects comprising a work, the audience build a relationship with familiar things in an unfamiliar manner and create their own new music. This exhibition will be an opportunity to encounter the moments where we realize that various aspects of our life can be more enriched by seeing them from an unfamiliar perspective and ‘playing’ in a new way.
