Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art proudly presents its 2022 Site of Contemporary Art exhibition The Most Brilliant Moments For You. Focused on artists of the digital native generation, this exhibition introduces the various desires that have newly surfaced in the daily lives of this generation who are familiar with the online lifestyle. The participating artists tell us their respective stories: the creation of a transcendental space with surreal personas such as monsters, heroes, angels appearing in adventure and fantasy stories(Kim Hansaem), new sensations which humans may experience through the device of severing senses(Kim Heecheon), hollow human desires that are hidden beneath the smooth surface of ceramic dolls(Choi Jiwon), aspiration for an autonomous cyborg(Tzusoo), desire of expanding the public domain established in virtual space(Park Yunju), game designed as a resting space for the alienated from society(An Gayoung), the crossroad of hidden emotions that arise between close family members(Stefanie Moshammer), human desire to become one with God(Shir Handelsman).
Through these works, we will delve into the themes of digital native generation’s emotions - surging anxiety, boredom, loneliness, and hate. In the era of ‘surplus reality’ of which the border between virtuality and reality is blurred, such emotions are viewed as excretion or catharsis, we should share and think about the intensified sensation of ‘diverse species’ including humans pursuing ‘surplus pleasure(jouissance)’ and the related ideas growing more concrete. Such desires make us dream the eternal in the space transcending our limited life time(digital space) through symbolized concepts(beautiful body, capital, etc.). We project our emotions and obtain satisfaction. We are temporarily freed from the meaningless emptiness while we are driven towards such space.
Therefore through this exhibition the viewer ‘encounters the life online’ which has become a part of our daily routine, and is invited to question the paradox; whether our time of heading towards our desires without knowing the zenith of pleasure would indeed be ‘the most brilliant moments’ for us.
* Digital Native:
The generation that were raised in a digital environment since their birth surrounded by digital devices such as PC, mobile phones, MP3, using the Internet daily.
* Jouissance:
Lacan has used this term to indicate a sort of orgasmic pleasure which goes beyond phallogocentrism. Jouissance lexically includes the meaning of sexual pleasure, but it transcends the meaning of general pleasure.
